Early Signing Period Begins

For recruitniks, there are few times a year more exciting than the National Letter of Intent signing periods. While football fans have to wait until February to know who will be suiting up for their favorite team just a couple months later, most other sports see recruits sign well before their high school careers come to a close.

Such is the case in lacrosse. High school seniors can put their names to letters of intent yesterday through next Wednesday, and they won’t see a college field in (regular-season) competition until nearly 18 months from now. Here is a list of expected signees either to Michigan colleges or from the state of Michigan:

Some of these guys have already signed, I’m sure (and not all of them may be legit, as LaxPower isn’t 100% reliable), but stay tuned throughout the week as the updates come in.

Some of them may be walk-ons who don’t sign a NLI right? In lacrosse, where there’s not much scholarship money, there are some heavily recruited kids who don’t get any money. (Also, in lacrosse there are a lot of recruits who don’t need any money.) Without scholarship money they don’t get a NLI. It’s my understanding that without a NLI, the school can’t say they are commitments until they have enrolled.

    • Tim says:

That’s probably the case for a lot of these guys. You are correct that the school can’t acknowledge them until they sign (or enroll, if they don’t sign).

  2. Josh says:

Coach Euker, who coached at Missouri last year, was picked up by Michigan as a volunteer assistant.

FYI, Kurt Urbin from Stoney Creek also signed w/ UDM.

Good speed can play attack or mid. Anchored the attack for Hebert for GP Select this summer and has played for Kolon at 1763 in the past too.

    • AndyD says:

Detroit is definitely going the in-state route mostly. They keep finding players I’ve never heard of. Good for the state. Hopefully will get UDM where they want to go.

      • Reg Hartner says:

They also picked up a D from CC named Yono. I don’t know enough about him to comment yet. I’m trying to get more info on him.

    Reg,
I know UM has Kennedy and Walker coming from Rice next year. Anyone else from the state? Any current juniors either program is recruiting or have committed?

    • Reg Hartner says:

I don’t have any inside info for UM. Tim would know better. As far as I’ve heard the only two in state kids for 2012 are the 2 Rice kids.

There are a number of other in 2012 in state kids talking to schools from D1 on down, but I don’t think any of them are being chased by Michigan. We should know a little more after the combine this Saturday at All-American. Guys I would keep an eye on to play at the next level are Horton (M) and DeMatia (LSM) from Clarkston, Kelly (G) from Portage Central, a few of the CC kids like Mullen, Gingel or Neal. I know Warner from Rice could play at the next level, but he’ll probably play football instead. Not sure about the rest. The team that went out to Chicago 2 weeks ago did really well, but not sure if they’ll get any offers. I’ll follow up with some of the travel team coaches and see what they know. Team Total, GP Select, 1763 and Sting have all traveled and are going to major recruiting events. They might be able to give us some insight on who’s getting looks.

As far as 2013 goes Sergio Perkovic from Rice is the stud. He’s already hearing from most of the Ivy league schools and I’m sure he’s hearing from UDM and UM. Kyle Beauregard from NDP is the other one to keep an eye on, but it’s still a little early for that. I would say the early lead on him is to follow his brother to UDM.

This is all speculation and my guesses based on what I’ve seen at events or heard from their travel team coaches. I have not spoken to any of these kids about their plans.
