I count 17 seniors on that list. Do you have a count for how many current seniors will be on that list next year? It’s interesting to track how that list grows from year to year.

    • Tim says:

Based on Laxpower (a decidedly unofficial way to go about things), there are 13 seniors from Michigan going D-1 next year: nine to Detroit, two to Michigan, and one each to Penn and Marquette. Add in two more for Marquette (2011 signee K.C. Kennedy and Maryland transfer Joey Fontanesi), and you have a net loss of two. Given that a couple more might either be added via walk-on elsewhere, or lost (either quitting due to lack of playing time or being cut, most likely), and you’ll probably see that number hold.

  2. AndyD says:

With more D1 teams coming in the next few years I expect the number will grow in the long run simply because there are more opportunities. However, in the short term, it will probably drop because the numbers at Michigan are inflated. They kept all their club guys to start the program. A lot of those guys wouldn’t be playing D1 without that opportunity. Their incoming classes are almost all non-Michigan, and over the next couple of years most of the in-state spots on that roster will be replaced by out-of-state kids. Detroit, under Holtz, has shown a commitment to fill the roster with mostly Michigan players. I wonder how long that will remain the case. Their recruiting doesn’t show any real signs of changing.

    • Tim says:

Yeah, it will be interesting to see where the numbers go. Totally agree that, at least in the short term, an exodus of the club players from the Michigan program could reduce the overall representation.

There has been a lot of talk about more high school opportunities in Michigan (and the fact that it hasn’t exactly led to increased rate of guys playing in college), and I’m curious to see if D-1 players from inside the state stick around and become high school or youth coaches, improving the level of play in the state.

For all the talk of how the MHSAA is really stunting the growth of the game (a fact that, to me, is 100% undeniable at this point), the decrease in level of play in Michigan has also loosely coincided with the loss of the state’s only D-1 program, Michigan State, in the late 90s. Now that there are two back in the state, could the game rebound?
