Despite loss, Detroit clinches MAAC two-seed

Detroit’s favorite Beatles song today? “A Little Help from my Friends.” Despite a loss to VMI (full breakdown coming Monday), they’ll be the No. 2 seed in the MAAC Tournament.

Thanks to Canisius’ upset over Marist – pay no mind to when I called that unlikely – the Titans are in a four-way tie for second place in the conference. Thanks to holding tiebreakers over all three of the other teams (17-12 over Canisius, 8-7 in OT over Marist, and 8-7 over Jacksonville), the Titans will be the No. 2 seed in the MAAC Tournament.

Thanks to the MAAC procedures, the remaining three teams have to go to the third tiebreaker to find separation. All had 1-1 records against the other two teams, and identical 0-2 records against the Siena/Detroit grouping, and 2-0 records against VMI/Manhattan.

That means they form a “mini-conference” and the team with the fewest goals allowed will earn the No. 3 seed, and the next best earns the No. 4. To the chart:

Team v. Canisius v. Marist v. Jacksonville Total Allowed
Canisius x 5 9 14
Marist 7 x 7 14
Jacksonville 8 9 x 17

Jacksonville is eliminated by virtue of allowing the most goals. With the Dolphins out of the way, Canisius’s head-to-head win today gives them the nod at No. 3, while Marist drops to No. 4.

Ultimately, Detroit’s embarrassing loss to VMI doesn’t hurt them. In fact, by Canisius earning the No. 3 seed, the MAAC Tournament is made a little easier for the Titans. Despite today’s result, Marist is a better team than Canisius on the basis of the full-season résumé – and they have homfield advantage in the tournament. UDM takes on the easier opponent in round one, while Marist stands to better weaken Siena in the 1/4 game.

Assuming Detroit can get their act together (far from a guarantee, based on what we’ve seen in the second half of the year), their path to a potential MAAC Tournament championship got just a bit easier. If the Titans can be fully healthy – and with the services of their best players – next weekend, they stand the best chance in their four-year history as a program of making the Big Dance.

Detroit Preview: VMI

As broken down the other day, this game doesn’t mean much to Detroit’s entry into the MAAC Tournament. In fact, it doesn’t have much of an effect on who they’ll play, either. They’ll be the 2- or 3- seed against Marist, or the 2-seed against Jacksonville or Canisius. However, in terms of separating themselves from the middle of the pack, this game can help Detroit take another step forward as a program.

VMI

Virginia Military Institute Keydets Lacrosse

Fear the Keydets!

Live Stats.

2012
3-11 (1-6 MAAC). #59 Laxpower, #56 Tempo-Free.

Tempo-Free Profile

Raw numbers from the VMI season, and the adjusted numbers below come from the tempo-free database.

VMI 2011
VMI Opponents
Faceoff Wins 202 Faceoff Wins 110
Clearing 195-231 Clearing 230-266
Possessions 469 Possessions 412
Goals 110 Goals 155
Offensive Efficiency .235 Offensive Efficiency .376

Thanks to the spectacular Stephen Robarge, VMI is absolutely dominating possession – they’re fifth-best in the country when it comes to percentage there. Their ride is poor and their clear is only mediocre, but dominating at the dot has helped them run up a huge advantage.

That only serves to make it more sad that they’re so inept in every phase of offense and defense. They have the third-worst defense and fourth-worst offense in the country, adjusted for opponent strength. Their only wins are over hapless Wagner, hapless Mercer, and a Manhattan team whose five wins include those two hapless squads, awful Binghamton and Providence teams, and… uh… Detroit.

Experimental use of more tempofreelax.com features, go!:

(Ignore the EMO rates, there’s an issue with the data there. If anything else seems buggy, drop a comment so we can work on a fix).

Offense

One player stands out above the rest on the VMI offense, and that’s senior midfielder Keith Long. He has 40 points on the year, producing pretty evenly between goals (22) and assists (18). He’s a big guy at 6-3, 210, and the primary creator on the team.

The next three leading scorers are the starting attackmen, and they’re finishers above all else. They’re all over six feet tall too, so these aren’t jitterbug, dodging, creator-types, either. Senior Drew Leonard has 21 goals and two assists, junior Russell East has 16 goals and six assists, and freshman Mike DeBlasio has 15 goals and three assists.

There’s a sizable drop before the next group of scorers – the aforementioned four are your dangermen – and it includes one starting offensive midfielder (senior Chris Kitchen, with six goals and two assists), two guys who are listed at attack but probably have played mostly midfield this year (junior Bernie Mowbray and sophomore Mickey Hofmeister), and the FOGO, Robarge.

Outside of the top few guys, this is not a dangerous offensive lineup. I also think it’s a good matchup for UDM, who can stick their outstanding LSM, Jordan Houtby, on the only dangerous midfielder, and play the three attackmen with the starting defenders.

Defense

We already know the VMI defense is bad (like really bad), but their personnel is still important to know.

Senior Kyle Hofstetter and sophomore Rory Dillon have started each and every game for the Keydets. They also lead the team among non-faceoff guys in ground balls. Hofstetter has the honor being the only player on the team to cause double-digit turnovers to this point.

The third defenseman is something of a mystery. Freshmen Jack Pease and Ty Trobridge seem to be the most-frequently used players who are still available. Neither has done anything of note statistically.

The LSM role has been split between junior Taylor Jenkins and freshman Tyler Prasnicki – the only players on the team at that position, if the roster is to be believed. The Keydets have some excellent (or, given the defense’s performance, I should probably say “productive”) defensive midfielders in Will Baker and Chris Rossie. Rossie has taken a few faceoffs – and done poorly on them – and is second on the team in ground balls, which leads me to believe he’s also one of the primary wing players on Robarge’s draws. Baker has six caused turnovers and 25 GBs on the year. Neither has taken a shot.

Between the pipes, VMI has tried a trio of players, with little success. Enormous (6-5) junior Matt Lindemann is by far the best statistically, with a .580 save percentage and “only” 10.39 goals against. He’s started and played the most games, with five and six, respectively.

Kelly McMinn is listed in the stats but not on the roster – hello, kicked off the team midseason – and though he had an awful GAA of 14.99, he actually had the second-best save percentage. Junior J Rice saves a dismal .439 of shots faced. Lindemann has gone the distance in the past five games – and played the majority of the previous in relief of Rice – and is likely the only keeper UDM will see.

Special Teams

This is where things could get really ugly for Detroit. VMI is the best faceoff team in the country, The Titans are one of the worst. Robarge should dominate, as he has just about everyone all year. He’s winning .670 of his faceoffs and picking up the ground ball on 60% of his wins. That’s the best in the nation, folks.

Other aspects of the possession game favor Detroit. They should be able to ride the mediocre VMI clear into a reasonable failure rate, and their own resistible force of a clear (No. 58 nationally) is going up against VMI’s eminently-movable object of a ride (No. 52).

In the penalty game, VMI and their opponents commit penalties at approximately the same rate, so going against the most penalty-prone team in the land, they should have a slight advantage. One potentially-important note: Hofstetter is by far the most naughty player on VMI’s team, so isolating him one-on-one can result in either a good shot (or feed) or a penalty.

As far as once those penalties are committed, VMI is worse at converting than opponents, and both teams are in the mid-.200s. No serious advantage either way, though VMI’s ability to make Detroit pay for their inevitable penalties won’t be so dangerous as to make the Titans play scared.

Big Picture

Win, and you’ve locked up the two seed, most likely playing Marist in the MAAC Tournament. Lose, and you… probably still play Marist, just with the 2- and 3-seeds reverse. This game isn’t exactly meaningless, but it’s far from the most important UDM has played this season.

It would be really weird if the Titans owned the middle of the conference, with their three losses coming to the best team and the two worst teams in the MAAC. It is senior day for VMI, so there might be a bit of a boost to their home field advantage, but not much.

VMI site preview. Detroit site preview.

Predictions

VMI is excellent at faceoffs, and varying degrees of mediocre-to-horrible at everything else.

  • The Titans concede the faceoff on over half the draws. If they aren’t going to beat Robarge (and the stats say it’s unlikely), there’s no reason to give up a clean win. We saw Michigan actually exceed expectations against Loyola using that technique, and Detroit might do the same.
  • I’m not sure what offensive personnel UDM will have available (namely Joel Matthews), but it really shouldn’t matter. This is a very poor VMI defense, and the Titans have enough weapons to make them pay.
  • On the other side of the ball, VMi isn’t quite so inept, but Detroit has a defense that is very stout when not overmatched by the opposing personnel (such as against North Carolina, Delaware, et al). Shutting off the four dangerous players may open opportunities for other guys, but it gives the Titans the best chance to bog down the Keydet offense and get the win.
  • For whatever reason – partially for those described above – I’m feeling a lot of penalties in this game. That hurts UDM a little more than it does VMI, so stay on the lookout.

VMI is really bad, and although Detroit has had some embarrassing moments this year (losing to Manhattan, getting effectively blown out by Georgetown) they’re by far the superior squad. With recent results – including the crushing loss to Bellarmine last week when leading by four freakin’ goals with barely that many minutes remaining – I can’t speak to the psyche of this Detroit tean, but they should be able to pull off the win regardless. Detroit wins 13-8, locking up the No. 2 seed in the MAAC tournament.

CCLA Division-2 Bracket

Although we’re still a weekend away from the CCLA Division-1 tournament matchups being set, the 8-team Division-2 playoff starts this weekend, featuring five teams from Michigan:

CCLA Lacrosse Playoff Bracket

CCLA Division-2 Playoffs

Two Michigan-based teams are bound to get knocked out in the quarterfinal round, with all-Michigan matchups between Grand Valley State and Oakland, and Davenport and Aquinas. GVSU and Davenport are heavy favorites to square of in the conference championship game.

The remaining Michigan team, Hope College, is the five-seed, and wil travel to four-seed Indiana Tech. The Flying Dutchmen bested ITU 13-11 in Holland April 13. Should they earn a repeat victory, they’ll most likely face Grand Valley next Friday in Saline.

Lax Links: April 26, 2012

Link City. As always, if you have something you’d like to share, the e-mail and twitter inboxes are always open.

High School

Cranbrook Cranes Lacrosse Detroit Country Day

Lookin' good, even in defeat.

Usually game scores aren’t enough to make a Lax Links post, but I’m a sucker for attached pictures. Country Day took down Cranbrook 11-9 last night.

Nick Buckley talks the growth of lacrosse in the Battle Creek Enquirer‘s coverage area.

“People always say it’s a Detroit and a Grand Rapids game, but Lansing has started to make a pocket for themselves as well,” said Harper Creek boys’ club head coach Ben Siebert. “You’ve got Lakeview and Pennfield, hopefully within a year or two us as well. You have the Portage schools and Kalamazoo teams. We have enough teams. If some team has the right guys in enough spots, one of us could make a run.”

It’s probably a long way off before a Southwest Michigan team makes a deep run into the playoffs – Portage Central is the area’s top team, at No. 22 in the Laxpower rankings in the state.

Former Ann Arbor Pioneer coach Bob Stevenson was selected to the Michigan State Lacrosse Coaches’ Association’s Hall of Fame, along with six other (worthy) honorees.

Photo gallery from Rockford’s Lax vs. Cancer game against FHC. The Rams won 7-6, but most importantly, raised nearly 12K for cancer research.

Brother Rice makes LaxPower’s national top 25. ESPNHS isn’t quite so kind to the Warriors, but Rice clocks in at No. 41 on their Fab 50.

Detroit

Women’s lacrosse senior Emily Boissonneault received Detroit’s highest athletics honor with the President’s Award as most outstanding female student-athlete. Also from the Detroit awards luncheon, men’s lacrosse sophomore Shayne Adams received the Dad Butler Award for overcoming injury. He suffered a knee tear in the Titans’ penultimate game last season, and has rebounded to become the Titans’ second-leading scorer (with a good chance to claim first, pending the status of Joel Matthews).

Detroit was a banquet-heavy program in the past week, with the lacrosse team also holding their year-end soiree. Your individual award winners:

  • Shayne Adams – offensive player of the year.
  • Jamie Hebden – defensive player of the year.
  • John Nowicki – coaches’ award.
  • A.J. Levell – team MVP.

Congrats to all four, and of course to the first four-year senior class in Titan program history. Photo gallery from the banquet.

Jacksonville press release says the Dolphins are definitely in the MAAC Tournament, but I’m fairly certain that’s not quite the case yet. There are some scenarios (OK, one scenario, and an unlikely one) in which they miss out.

Michigan

Former Michigan defender Harry Freid (now a 5th-year senior at St. John’s, and a starting defender for the Red Storm) foresees big things in the future for the Wolverines:

Hi @DaveBrandonAD got to watch my first@UMichLacrosse game of the year. Special things to come for the driven group

ESPN’s Paul Carcaterra chimes in with a similar sentiment:

Hats off 2 @UMichLacrosse 4 bringing it year 1. Not 1 recruiting class on campus….tells you what they had in past & where they R going.

Sure, feelgood quotes are ultimately meaningless, but it’s nice to have people talking positively about you in the midst of a 1-12 season.

MCLA

Davenport’s 16-9 win over Hope earned them the CCLA North Division Championship.

More PR-penned Davenport news. Preview of the Panthers’ CCLA Tournament opener against Aquinas this Saturday.

Clark Bell photo gallery from Michigan State’s 16-8 win over Toledo on Sunday.

Photos from the Grand Valley-Calvin game last week. Grand Valley won 31-5. Photos from the GVSU-Ferris State game Saturday, which the Lakers won 24-2.

T.V. details are available for the MCLA Championships. Once again, the semis and finals will air on Fox College Sports, Thursday, May 17 (D-1 semis) and Saturday, May 19 (D-2 and D-1 Finals). Michigan teams have a great shot to make the D-2 final, and Michigan State has been close to making a run in recent seasons in D-1.

The Next Level

This is not typically a section in Lax Links, what with a dedicated category of posts, but the Oakland Press talks about Brother Rice graduates Nick Dolik and Danny Henneghan, two key players in Penn State’s resurgence as a program.

“Both of these guys play key roles on the field for us,” Penn State second-year head coach Jeff Tambroni said. “They did a great job of buying into a brand-new system last year. Both of them were recruited by the previous coach and went through the adversity of playing for a new coaching staff. But, to their credit, both have adjusted very well.”

That’s not America’s most glowing quote of all time, but it’s good to see the two Mitten State natives getting some ink.

Recruiting

Dexter senior Patrick Rogers has committed to Hendrix College, a D-3 program in Conway, Ark.

St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) junior midfielder Kimberly Coughlan has committed to Michigan. If my timeline is right, she’ll be a freshman on the inaugural squad in 2014.

As always, thanks for visiting and don’t hesitate to drop me any news tips, game reports, etc.

MAAC Bracketology

Last year, I was following this whole scene pretty closely, what with Detroit making a surprising run toward the top of the conference. It hasn’t been quite so interesting this year: The Titans were expected to make the MAAC Tournament, and the regular season intrigue revolved more around whether or not they’d be able to take the top spot than anything else.

Anyway, with one weekend of conference play remaining, it’s a good time to take a look at scenarios for the MAAC Championships.

Locked in or Eliminated

Siena sits alone atop the conference at 5-0 with one game left to play. Every other MAAC team already has at least two conference losses, so the Saints will be the No. 1 seed.

Manhattan and VMI currently sit tied at the bottom of the MAAC standings with identical 1-4 records. There are already four teams that will end the conference season with fewer than four losses, regardless of this weekend’s results, so both of those teams are out of the hunt for a bid in the conference tournament.

The Gooey Middle

Jacksonville has already completed its regular season, and has a 3-3 record. That leaves three other teams within a half-game of exactly .500 with one game remaining. Time for a chart.

Team Record To Play
Marist 3-2 Canisius
Detroit 3-2 @ VMI
Canisius 2-3 @ Marist

A Detroit win over VMI clinches the No. 2 seed for Detroit regardless of other outcomes – they’ve earned the tiebreaker over Marist by virtue of an 8-7 overtime win in March. But for their epic letdown against Manhattan in the following game, the Titans would already have that 2-seed sewn up.

A Marist win over Canisius has two possible results, depending on what happens with the UDM-VMI game. If Detroit beats the Keydets (as they should), that makes Marist the No. 2 seed, eliminates Canisius from the tournament, and makes Jacksonville the No. 4 seed.

Chaos Theory

If Canisius upsets Marist (it should be pointed out how unlikely this is – Marist is at home, and by all accounts a much better team anyway), all hell can break loose. That makes a three-way tie for No. 3 in the conference, or a four-way tie for No. 2 if Detroit also loses to VMI.

In the instance of a four-way tie, Detroit would take the No. 2 seed, since they have victories over every other team involved in the tie (their only losses would be to the locked-in No. 1 Siena and the two eliminated teams). The race, then, would be for Nos. 3 and 4.

This is a tie that is not easily resolved. To the tie-breaking procedures! In our hypothetical, all three teams have identical 0-2 records against the top two teams in the MAAC (Siena and Detroit), and 1-1 records against each other. They also have identical 2-0 records against the bottom two teams in the league.

We’re dropping to super-extended tiebreakers now, and it comes down to goals allowed within the 3-team tie. Jacksonville allowed 17 to the two teams combined. They’re rooting for a high-scoring game. Canisius allowed nine goals to Jacksonville, and Marist allowed seven to the Dolphins. Breaking down possible scenarios there (remember, Canisius has to beat Marist, or all other points are moot and we go to the simple scenarios):

Scenario No. 3 No. 4 Eliminated
Canisius wins by 1 or 2, scores more than 10 Jacksonville Canisius Marist
Canisius wins by 1 or 2, scores less than 10 Marist Jacksonville Canisius
Canisius wins by more than 2, scores more than 10 Jacksonville Canisius Marist
Canisius wins by more than 2, scores less than 10 Canisius Marist Jacksonville

We’re going pretty far down the rabbit hole here, but thankfully, since Jacksonville has allowed an odd number of goals and the differential between Canisius and Marist against the Dolphins is even, we won’t have to go even further into tiebreakers.

Disclaimer: it’s late and my brain is pretty much fried. It’s entirely possible that these goal differentials aren’t being worked out properly in my head. I’m confident, but not 100% so in these scenarios.

The Big Picture

I’ve just spent a loooong time discussing hypothetical scenarios that are unlikely to come true (as a side note, LaxPower already has Jacksonville penned in as the No. 4 seed, which is not correct, if my calculations are correct). The most likely outcomes of this weekend’s games are a Detroit win over VMI and a Marist win over Canisius. If that comes to fruition, your field goes:

  1. Jacksonville
  2. Detroit
  3. Marist
  4. Jacksonville

In the slightly more likely case of Marist pulling off the win and Detroit falling to VMI, the Titans and Red Foxes switch positions, but the outcome is the same: they’ll play in the 2/3 game while Siena and Jacksonville square off in the 1/4.

The sports fan in me is always rooting for chaos, but things should stay fairly vanilla as long as Marist wins.
