Michigan 9, Rutgers 13

Michigan’s season-long theme of “close, but no cigar” holds true once more. Coming into the Rutgers game, I thought the Wolverines would have a chance to pick up their second win of the year, but it would be tough to actually pull off the feat. That held true in Piscataway.

Tempo Free

From the official box score, a look at the tempo-free stats:

Rutgers 2012
Michigan Rutgers
Faceoff Wins 8 Faceoff Wins 18
Clearing 14-18 Clearing 9-9
Possessions 26 Possessions 31
Goals 9 Goals 13
Offensive Efficiency .346 Offensive Efficiency .419

Given that this game was played at a snail’s pace, Michigan’s nine-goal output is pretty impressive. Unfortunately, the defense similarly unimpressive. Both Michigan and Rutgers set season-highs for offensive efficiency, and only Denver, Air Force, and Mount St. Mary’s were better against Michigan’s defense than Rutgers was.

Given that Rutgers entered the game as one of the country’s worst offenses, that’s not a good thing. Of course, when both teams score more than you’d expect in a slow-paced game… sometimes weird things just happen.

Michigan got killed in the possession game by a very poor performance on faceoffs (about which more in a moment), and an inability to ride Rutgers into any turnovers on the clear. Since I didn’t have a chance to watch the game, I can’t speak to whether that’s a strategy intentionally employed or just the result of poor play.

In-depth tempo-free stuff from TempoFreeLax:

Notes

We shall start with faceoffs. Michigan performed pretty well through the first three quarters, winning eight of 18 draws (.444). However, in the final frame, during which Rutgers turned a one-goal advantage into the final four-goal margin, Michigan went 0-for-8 (.000), allowing the Scarlet Knights to dominate possession and put the game away. Neither Michigan nor Rutgers provides full boxscores with play-by-play, but I’m assuming RU switched up faceoff guys after the opening draw of the third quarter, and Blake Burkhardt dominated (12/14) where Joseph Nardella (6/12) simply couldn’t solve Brian Greiner.

For Michigan, assists were at a serious premium. This is something I plan to take a closer look at in the offseason, but I’m working on a theory that better offenses assist on a greater percentage of their goals. Michigan’s three assists (by Will Meter, Zach Dauch, and Jason Davis) on nine goals isn’t particularly strong. Seeing as how it was the Wolverines’ most efficient offensive day, it’s easy to say “shut up Tim, you’re wrong,” but I think the output could have been even better.

As for the goals themselves, Trevor Yealy, Willie Steenland, and Thomas Paras had two apiece. Zach Dauch’s goal made him the only Wolverine with each type of point on the day. While Yealy and Paras tied for the team lead in scoring, they took seven and nine shots, respectively, so they weren’t particularly efficient.

Emil Weiss got absolutely peppered in net, making 16 saves while allowing 13 goals. His defense hasn’t exactly done him a lot of favors this season, so going forward when they (presumably) improve, his experience in 2012 can either shatter his psyche or make him a better goalie because he’ll be used to standing on his head, and won’t have to do it anymore.

One area where Weiss was a liability was in the clearing game. The Wolverines failed four clears, and Weiss had three turnovers. My speculation is that three of the four failed clears were at least in part his responsibility. He’s still the better-clearing goalie of the two we’ve seen this year.

Kevin Hover and Scott Klimchak had big offensive days for Rutgers, with three and five goals, respectively, while each adding an assist. As mentioned in the preview, Nick DePaolera (4 assists) was the big feeder on the day.

This game was one of several in a row where the opposing goalkeeper was below .500 in save%. On this day, it was Joseph Donnelly saving just .400 of shots faced. I’m not sure of the reason for that, but there are a few likely hypotheses. Does Michigan get shots off so rarely that goalies are surprised when they do? Or are the goalies just surprised when those shots are on net? Is Michigan’s offensive scheme actually really good at creating open looks for shooters? It’s tough to say without seeing the games live, but it’s clear that something is going well for Michigan.

Up Next

The Wolverines have a week off to rest (and for many of them, graduate from college) before they head to Chapel Hill, N.C. to close out the regular season. With Michigan’s talent deficit relative to the Tar Heels, I’m not certain that the extra week of rest does them many favors.

Since that’s the season’s final game (last I heard, the NCAA isn’t handing out at-large bids to 1-13 teams), I should be able to start putting a bow on the season shortly after it, and exploring where Michigan can improve – besides everywhere – and where they have building blocks in place.

Detroit 8, Bellarmine 9

As I said in the preview, this is a game that, ultimately, didn’t mean a whole lot one way or the other for UDM’s season. However, given the way it happened… this was a terrible, horrible loss.

Tempo Free

From the official box score, a look at the tempo-free stats:

Bellarmine 2012
Bellarmine Detroit
Faceoff Wins 7 Faceoff Wins 14
Clearing 13-15 Clearing 11-16
Possessions 27 Possessions 32
Goals 9 Goals 8
Offensive Efficiency .333 Offensive Efficiency .250

Detroit faced off very well in this game, something that they don’t usually do. Considering Bellarmine is juuuust below average nationally, that’s impressive. The Knights’ ride gave UDM some trouble, though it didn’t really kill them.

In efficiency terms, Bellarmine’s late flurry turned what had been a really bad day into a very good one for the Knights’ offense. Detroit’s offensive output was about what you’d expect.

Overall, this was a very slow game, not necessarily what you’d expect out of the country’s fastest team and one that’s above-average in terms of pace.

In-depth tempo-free stuff from TempoFreeLax:

Notes

Just to make sure we’ve got the story straight here, Detroit led 8-4 with 4:06 left in the game. In order to win, Bellarmine had to score four goals in just over four minutes to even get it to overtime. Instead, they scored five goals in just over four minutes, and the game-winner arrived with just 12 seconds to spare in the game. For a Detroit team that dominated the contest up until those final few minutes, the final result is nothing short of an embarrassment.

Faceoffs went really well for the Titans. Tyler Corcoran won eight of 11 draws, Brandon Davenport won five of nine, and Danny Preston even got a chance on senior day, winning his only faceoff. It’s a shame that the strong performance – a rarity for this team – was unable to help deliver a win.

Joel Matthews was out of the lineup once more. Not sure on his status with the team at this point, but he’s still listed on the roster (when Matt Gregson left the team last year, his name was immediately removed from the roster, so that can be telling). It’s unfair to speculate beyond “I wonder if Matthews is going to be back this weekend,” so I’ll refrain from doing anything more.

With Matthews out of the lineup, it should come as no surprise that Shayne Adams carried the offense for Detroit. He scored a hat trick, and even shared the love a little bit, adding an assist on LSM Jordan Houtby’s goal. Alex Maini had two goals and an assist, while John Nowicki and Scott Drummond both had one of each.

Houtby’s performance wasn’t just strong because of the rare goal. He also caused two turnovers and picked up five ground balls during the course of the game. Jamie Hebden was the only other Titan to cause two turnovers (yet another rare occurrence for this UDM team). A.J. Levell went the distance, and saved 14 shots while allowing nine goals. That’s not a bad performance, but for the “L” next to his name on the scoresheet.

This was a tale of two halves, even moreso than a tale of the first 55 minutes and the final five. The Titans outshot Bellarmine 17-13 in the first half (12-4 in the second quarter) and were outshot 22-11 in the final two quarters. Most of the other stats remained pretty even (or even, in the case of faceoffs, s;anted toward UDM), but the shot numbers are pretty telling.

Boxscore. UDM game story. Senior Day photo gallery.

Up Next

After that gutpunch, UDM travels to Lexington, Va. for what should be a fairly routine win over VMI. This Titan team seems to be dealing with psychological tests at every turn, so they’ll have to buckle down (especially in the instance that Joel Matthews doesn’t play) in order to avoid being upset.

They clinched a spot in the MAAC Championships with weekend losses by VMI and Manhattan, but should be able to improve their seed with a win over the conference’s cellar-dweller. Stay tuned later this week for a MAAC bracketology post.

Michigan Preview: Rutgers

It comes as no surprise that Michigan’s Team One has struggled. Their last realistic chance at victory comes tomorrow evening, on the road at Rutgers.

Clearing 186-216 Clearing 190-225
Possessions 396 Possessions 396
Goals 104 Goals 138

Things that are better than the Rutgers defense: the sound of nails on a chalkboard, the 2011 Indianapolis Colts, the Michigan defense… wait, what? Yes, adjusted for schedule strength, Rutgers’ defense is actually worse than Michigan’s, coming in a .351 compared to the Wolverines’ .349. The offense isn’t a whole lot better, though it gets adjusted upward to .273.

The thing that’s preventing Rutgers from being Michigan-level bad this year is a stalemate in possession. The Scarlet Knights are just barely above .500 on faceoffs, and although their opponents have more clearing attempts (hello, inept Scarlet Knights offense), RU is riding them pretty successfully to stay even in that metric.

Overall, what you seem to have here is a team that is not particularly talented on either end of the field, but good enough going up and down it to stay competitive.

Offense

Senior midfielder Will Mangan leads the team in goals and points, putting in 26 himself and assisting on five others. His fellow senior Mike Diehl is big (6-3, 225) and as the team’s fourth-leading scorer, has a similar tilt toward goals with 18 and only 3 assists. The starting offensive midfield is rounded out by a freshman, Brian Goss. He’s a little more balanced with 10 goals and eight assists.

The primary starting attack is comprised of a senior and two sophomores. Redshirt soph Scott Klimchak (whose twin brother Matthew doesn’t play at all) has 19 goals and six assists, and is the only guy on the unit who could reasonably be considered a finisher. Sophomore Nick DePaolera is the best feeder on the squad, with an even split between goals and assists on his 30 points. Senior Kevin Hover is sixth on the team in scoring with 5 goals and seven assists.

Outside of those guys, nobody has taken double-digit shots this year, aside from redshirt sophomore middie Benjamin Schwing. Senior attack Duncan Clancy has also seen playing time with sporadic starts, but has played in just eight games, presumably due to injury. He is a feeder when he’s on the field, with two goals and six assists this year.

Outside of a couple guys, this is not an assist-heavy team at all. That is reflected in a poor offense (off-season project: determine how assist rate relates to overall offensive efficiency), and Rutgers has broken double-digits only twice this year – albeit once more than Michigan has done the same.

Defense

The same three defensemen have started every game. Sophomore Nick Contino leads the team in caused turnovers with 19, reshirt sophomore Christopher Zybrick isn’t too far behind with 15, and senior Jacob Fradkin adds 12 of his own. That group doesn’t have tons of experience, but after starting 13 games together, you have to imagine they have good chemistry. Stats say otherwise, of course. Senior Ryan Warnick also gets time on the unit.

Redshirt freshman Andrew Parrilla is the primary long-stick midfielder, and leads defensive players in GBs with 26. Based on the stats, there are a few suspects for defensive midfielder, primarily Anthony Terranova (10GB, 7 shots) and Zachary Zenda (5 CT, 5 shots).

In goal, there has been a cast of thousands for the Scarlet Knights. Steven Lusby (seven games) and Rudy Butler (five games) have started every contest they’ve played in – meaning that neither has ever been replaced by the other, but rather always by Joseph Donnelly, who has also started a game himself.

The junior Donnelly has played about half the minutes between the pipes that either of the other two has. He also has the worst numbers, saving just .455 of shots faced and allowing 11.48 goals per game. His fellow junior, Butler, has the best goals-against average (9.60), but isn’t saving balls at quite the rate (.484) as is sophomore Steven Lusby (.492).

Butler started the first several games before presumably getting replaced (maybe due to injury, though I see no mention of it). At that point, Donnelly started one game, then Lusby has started the most recent seven, with Donnelly getting relief appearances in each of the last three. Expect Lusby to start, with a chance to see Donnelly, as well.

Special Teams

Freshman Joseph Nardella has been Rutgers’ go-to faceoff specialist, winning .539 of his draws. His fellow freshman, longpole Blake Burkhart, has taken a third as many draws, and won .515 of them. A couple other players have taken just a handful of faceoffs, none winning any better than .500.

Rutgers’ clear is pretty good, No. 17 nationally. Of course, they’ll be seeing different tactics with Michigan’s 10-man, and it will be interesting to see if that is something they exploit or succumb to. The Scarlet Knights are a middle-of-the-pack riding team, and shouldn’t exploit Michigan’s poor clear all that much.

Rutgers commits more penalties than opponents on the year, but both sides are converting at identical 40% clips. Michigan’s man-up is pretty bad, but they’re also not a penalty-prone team. I foresee a stalemate there.

Big Picture

At this point, Michigan is not expected to do a whole lot. They got their win against Mercer, got beat up against some good teams, and had narrow losses – some excruciating – in a number of other contests. Any win doesn’t validate them as a good team (or even prove they’re not a bad one), it simply sets a good vibe going into the offseason.

That said, Rutgers looks pretty exploitable. Their only win in the past six games was over a one-win Providence squad, and even that came in overtime. They’ve been pasted in each of the last three.

Rutgers isn’t a good team, and Michigan isn’t (quite) as bad as their record indicates. Stealing a win here, at the very least, is a feel-good moment going into the offseason.

Predictions

This is going to be far from a clash of the Titans. Each team is trying to salvage a little respect for their season – any other goal has long since passed. In my opinion, that means Michigan has more to play for. It was impossible for their season to not live up to expectations, and they’ve been playing for the future all along. Sure, Rutgers has their Senior Night happening, but teams limp to the finish all the time in this situation.

  • Rutgers wins more than half of the game’s faceoffs, but they don’t get to 2/3. That’s an average performance for Michigan at X, especially against a decent unit.
  • Michigan has the easiest time scoring in the 6-v-6 since the Mercer game. I’m hardly going out on a limb, given that Rutgers is the worst defense they’ve played since Mercer.
  • We don’t see a youth movement – yet. Michigan might not have much to play for this season, but getting that second win of the year could be a big confidence-builder for next year. JP will play whomever he thinks will help him win this game – he’s not sacrificing this one in the name of the future. He’ll save the youngsters for next week’s shellacking at North Carolina (unless even there, he doesn’t want to hurt their psyche).
  • Michigan’s defense looks better than it has at times in recent weeks against a mediocre Scarlet Knights offense, and Emil Weiss makes a couple plays to rob Rutgers (but also lets in a softie or two).

I really want to go out on a limb and pick the Michigan win here. I think the season-long momentum favors the Wolverines (other than the Bellarmine game, they’ve improved steadily through the second half of the season), they have a bit more to play for, and the matchups don’t look scary in the least. However, until they’ve proven they can do it, I’m not picking Michigan over an “establishment” team, bad though Rutgers may be. Michigan falls 11-9 in Piscataway.

Detroit Preview: Bellarmine

Bellarmine was just in Southeast Michigan a few weeks ago, and headed home with a 13-8 victory over Michigan in an ugly game. They’ll try to make it 2-for-2 in the Great Lakes Lax State when they take on Detroit tomorrow.

Raw numbers from the Bellarmine season, and the adjusted numbers below come from the tempo-free database.

Bellarmine 2011

Faceoff Wins 113 Faceoff Wins 117
Clearing 162-199 Clearing 171-203
Possessions 344 Possessions 357
Goals 91 Goals 104
Offensive Efficiency .265 Offensive Efficiency .291

Bellarmine’s number of possessions looks really low for this time of the year, but they’ve only played ten games – and will only play 12 to close the year (most other teams have played at least 11 with a couple regular-season games remaining). They’re actually sitting at No. 24 in pace, slightly above average.

Their adjusted offensive efficiency dips to .264, good for 49th nationally, while the defense looks slightly worse adjusted for schedule as well, rising to .302. That means the Knights have played a slightly below-average schedule to date. Given that they haven’t done particularly well against it… draw your own conclusions.

Experimental use of more tempofreelax.com features, go!:

(Ignore the EMO rates, there’s an issue with the data there. If anything else seems buggy, drop a comment so we can work on a fix).

Offense

Bellarmine does not score a whole lot (an offensive efficiency barely outside of the country’s bottom ten could have told you that). Only five knights have double-digit points, and none of those are exactly lighting the world on fire, either.

Junior attackman Michael Ward is the primary finisher with 20 goals to just three assists on the year, but it’s big (6-3, 215) senior midfielder Colton Clark who actually leads the team in scoring. He has a balanced output with 16 goals and 11 assists so far this season.

Behind the top two, there’s something of a drop to senior attackman Austin Bright. He has 12 goals and four assists this season. Little sophomore middie Cameron Garnder has eight goals and two assists, and junior Roanoake transfer Will Cary has six goals and five assists.

As you can probably guess by the stats listed above (since Clark is the only guy on the team with more than four assists), this is not an assist-happy offense. As bad offenses often do, they assist on fewer than half of their goals. That’s also a style that favors Detroit’s man-to-man pressure. Since they don’t dish the ball particularly well, they’ll have a hard time making the Titans pay for playing aggressively.

Senior attackman Devin Peurach, a Brother Rice product, has not appeared in a game for Bellarmine yet this season.

Defense

Your defense probably isn’t very good when your leading non-FOGO GB man is the goalie, but such is the case (by a mile) for Bellarmine. Junior goalkeeper Dillon Ward has played all but ten minutes between the pipes this season, and has picked up 35 GBs. In stats slightly more relevant to his goalkeeping ability, he’s saving .514 of shots faced, and allowing 10.48 goals per game. The Bellarmine defense actually hasn’t been as inept as their offense, so that’s good-not-great territory.

Seniors Matt Silvia, Adren Wipf (all-name team, right there), and Ross Doan have been the starters on Bellarmine’s D. Doan and Wipf are the only Knights with double-digit caused turnovers, with 12 and 11, respectively. This is not a high-pressure defense, having caused only 68 turnovers (.190 per possession – for comparison, the Titans’ turnover-happy D causes .287 turnovers per defensive possession).

The starting LSM has mostly been freshman Robert Schmitt, with appearances from classmate Michael Bender. The Bellarmine offense is so inept that it’s tough to tell who are bad offensive midfielders and who are the SSDMs, so no insight there.

Special Teams

Senior Andrew Bulgarelli – the pride of Troy Athens High School – has been the Knights’ primary faceoff specialist, and by far the most effective. He’s winning .514 of his draws, and collecting GBs on just about half of them. In fact, if senior Austin Powell (a defenseman, so it’s possible he’s only played when the team is conceding faceoffs) hadn’t taken so many draws, winning only 12 of the 40 he’s taken, the Knights wouldn’t be such a bad faceoff unit.

Bellarmine is a pretty good clearing team, on the cusp of the nation’s top 25%. They’re a mediocre team on the ride – surprising given that they play a healthy dose of 10-man – so my early guess is that the transition game won’t be a huge factor one way or the other.

Bellarmine and their opponents commit about the same number of penalties – so expect Detroit to outdo them in terms of time spent in the box. The Knights convert on their EMOs at a much better rate than opponents, so they should be able to cash in once or twice.

Big Picture

Bellarmine isn’t exactly on a roll of late – they’ve lost five in a row, and the game before the losing streak was a competitive one against Michigan. That includes some decent results against good opposition, including a one-goal loss to Fairfield, but a streak is a streak. Detroit has been a bit more up-and-down this year, with the win over Jacksonville (without Joel Matthews) hopefully serving as a sign that they’re ready to break out of a slump.

Either way, this game is little more than window dressing (I guess it can all-but guarantee the first-ever winning record for the Titans). They aren’t making the NCAA tournament without winning the MAAC tournament, and the late-season non-conference game has no impact either way on that goal.

Predictions

As mentioned above, Detroit is up-and-down while Bellarmine is mostly down this year. All three Knights wins have come on the road this year, but they’ve been against Mercer (#60 tempo-free), Michigan (#56 tempo-free), and Dartmouth (#45 tempo-free). This is a pretty bad team, and one that’s not even playing its best ball of the season.

  • I’m not sure if Joel Matthews is expected to play in this game. I would assume yes, and if so, the Titans should get to double-digit goals.
  • Faceoffs will be (say it with me now) a struggle for Detroit. They’ve shown the ability to hold their own at times, and that should be all they need to do in this one.
  • As mentioned above, the clear/ride game shouldn’t be a major factor impacting the game’s outcome. With Bellarmine’s use of a 10-man ride, however, you could see some long-distance attempts at goal from UDM.
  • Bellarmine turns the ball over quite a bit. Detroit forces turnovers frequently. You do the math.

Though the bullet points seem to indicate that I think it’s an easy win for Detroit, that’s not the case. Bellarmine has an experienced defense, and Detroit’s offense has been known to bog down in a serious way at times this season. The Detroit defense, however, should be able to do a number on Bellarmine’s offense. As long as the Titans don’t get dominated in possession, this is a very winnable game. Detroit 13, Bellarmine 9.
