MCLA

Something called THE RUSH (that’s all-caps, folks) is bringing MCLA highlights from the state of Michigan to the forefront. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a links post between the time of the press release coming through and the time of the games mentioned, but you can check out said highlights. Take a look at their site for more.

Preview of the Davenport/Grand Valley game over the weekend. The Panthers won 7-6 on an overtime goal by Jordan Richtsmeier. Photos from the game.

Grand Valley goalie Danny Kransberger – a transfer from Detroit Mercy – was the MCLA Division-2 player of the month for March.

Aquinas eased into the CCLA Playoffs with a 5-4 win over Ferris State Tuesday.

Recruiting

Detroit Country Day’s Ahmed Iftikhar gets some press (and video) for being ranked among the country’s best goalies. He’ll head to Ivy League Penn next year.

The Hill School (Pa.) defenseman Graham Conlan, a 2012 Michigan signee, is looking tohelp forge a lacrosse tradition at Michigan.

Michigan picked up a 2014 out of Culver Academy (Ind.). From Inside Lacrosse:

PJ Bogle, Attack, Culver Academy (Ind.) has verbally committed to Michigan. The 6-0, 175 lbs. recruit attended UPLax in the fallwith True Lacrosse. Bogle was also considering Princeton, UPenn, Harvard, and Notre Dame.

Not their most extensive breakdown, but there you go.

Etc.

Michigan was featured on Inside Lacrosse’s gear zone feature. That’s from whence comes the picture at right (obviously), but you can check out much more by going to their site.

Inside Lacrosse delves into the world of tempo-free statistics, though they’re using formulas a little different than those we’re employing at Tempo-Free Lax.

Michigan’s club lacrosse team lives on. It seems like it’s come a long way since I covered them in the summer.

Aquinas women’s coach Frank Rogers reached out to share the word on his team:

The Aquinas College Women’s Lacrosse team will head out tomorrow morning for Georgia and the NWLL National Championship (NAIA). The Saints enter the tournament as the Number 4 seed after completeing a 14-5 regular season.
AQ has the Number 2 rated Offense and Defense in the Nation, and they feature 13 different players who have 10 points or more on the season. They are lead by All American canidates Hannah Brogger (82g 35a 117pts), Kati Rogers (60g,16a 76pts), Liza Flewelling (19g 34a 53pts), Lauren McCarty (31g 16a 47pts) and Michelle Murphy and Alexa Bruns both with 40 total points.
The Saints will open tournament play vs Shorter University (GA) on Thursday

Good luck to them.

High School Roundup: April 19, 2012

Lots of action since last I provided an update. Plenty of material to cover here.

Michigan Wolverines Denver Pioneers Hill Academy Brother Rice lacrosse Zach Miller Chris Walker

Chris Walker (24) squares up on Denver-bound Zach Miller (in red). Photo courtesy Jim Walker

Brother Rice 13, Hill Academy (Ont.) 12 (OT).

I was at this game – and it was a good one. I’ll let Jim Walker (who provided the photo at right of his son Chris D-ing up on Zach Miller):

The photo was taken with about 30 seconds left in the game.

Zach begins his drive to the net with Chris working him over as good as Ive ever seeen Chris work an opponent.

But despite everything Chris did, that ball stayed in Miller’s pocket!!

Then Miller snapped his wrists releasing the ball into the net.

Brother Rice’s Coach Ambrose was incredulous that Miller could hold the ball despite Chris’ efforts.

He called for a stick check.

Sure enough, it was an illegal stick!

Goal waved off and 3 minute penalty called.

We go into OT, Riley Kennedy scores, Rice wins 13-12.

Video of the game-winning goal, which came from the crosse of Walker’s fellow future Wolverine Riley Kennedy:

Ann Arbor Greenhills 18, Monroe St. Mary-Catholic Central 1. Brian Catalsano led Greenhills with four goals and an assist.

Saginaw Heritage 16, Swartz Creek 2. GOALIE GOAL (ok, he wasn’t playing goalie at the time).

Vicksburg 15, Kalamazoo United 2.

Grand Rapids Christian 11, Zeeland 7.

DJ VanderBaan scored four goals for Grand Rapids Christian.

“VanderBaan was the standout midfielder,” Christian coach Andy Sharp said. “We isolated the ball effectively and scored on the opportunities.”

Zeeland must be upset to let a kid with such a Dutch name playing for the other team. (Just kidding, I’m from Grand Rapids, I’m well aware practically every kid at Christian has such a name).

Flint Powers 11, Lake Orion 5.

South Lyon 13, Ann Arbor Huron 3.

Bay City Western 6, Oxford 2.

Lowell 11, Northview 5.

East Grand Rapids 8, Holland West Ottawa 2.

Holland 11, Spring Lake 4.

Tyler Miedema scored a game-high three games to lead Holland Christian, while teammates Zach Wiersma and Connor Heidenreich each added two goals, and combined for seven assists.

More dutch names. Likin’ it.

Grand Rapids Catholic Central 12, Caledonia 8.

Dexter 25, Ypsilanti Lincoln 1.

Michael Spuller led the Dreads with six goals and four assists. Jake Waldrup and Andy McDonagh each scored five goals and had four assists also.

There have been accusations in the past that Dexter runs up the score on overmatched teams, and… well, that doesn’t particularly dissuade me.

Rockford 8, Brother Rice Orange 7. There seems to be some confusion outside of the East side of the state that this is effectively Brother Rice’s JV team (and their nominal JV is more like a JV B or freshman team), but good for Rockford in getting a win. UDM-bound Connor Flynn made 20 saves for the Rams.

Grand Blanc 13, Bay City Central 0.

Oxford 13, Chelsea 3.

Haslett-Williamston 17, Ann Arbor Huron 1. Huron has fallen hard this season. It’s probably because they don’t have Bill Upton writing Grantland Rice-esque game stories.

Orchard Lake St. Mary’s 13, Midland 10.

Holland West Ottawa 9, Mattawan 8. Article 2.

Grand Rapids Christian 9, Petoskey 7.

Trailing 6-5 to start the fourth quarter, Grand Rapids Christian scored four goals in the fourth to grab the win.
“The guys stepped up to the challenge and performed well today,” Grand Rapids Christian coach Andy Sharp said.

Comeback city.

Bay City Western 6, Davison 2.

Brother Rice 17, UD-Jesuit 3.

Oakland County season preview. TIMELY!

Clarkston splits road trip. The Wolves beat “Pinkerington” (actually Pickerington) 9-8 and lost to Olentangy Liberty 11-4.

Flint Powers 13, Tecumseh 4.

Saginaw Heritage 8, Davison 0.

Saline 14, Tecumseh 6.

A couple Oakland county game recaps on the girls side.

A couple boys and girls recaps.

Vicksburg 6, Battle Creek Lakeview 4.

Grand Haven 13, Holland Christian 12.

“Holland Christian is a very strong, competitive program,” Grand Haven coach Murle Greer said. “We made some mental mistakes in the first half, made adjustments in the second and the guys played with a lot of heart late in the game.”

shr

Rockford 13, Holland West Ottawa 3.

Cranbrook 17, Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard 5.

Lowell 12, Caledonia 9.

Grand Rapids Christian 10, Grand Rapids Catholic Central 9.

Flint Powers 12, Madison Heights Bishop Foley 11 (OT).

Dominic Hamper scored off an assist from Connor Owen with seven seconds remaining to send Flint Powers Catholic into overtime.

While that was obviously a very important part of the game, very odd to have no mention of the actual game-winner.

Walled Lake Central 9, Lapeer West 6.

Dexter 16, Tecumseh 6.

Ann Arbor Skyline 7, Ann Arbor Huron 5.

“This is our first big win,” Skyline coach Jack Robenalt said. “I know the guys are excited.”

Huron looks very down this year, but still a great result for Skyline.

Ann Arbor Pioneer 22, Temperance Bedford 0. Geeze.

Michigan 9, Ohio State 12

Another game, another result close enough to look more than a little respectable, but not close enough to be truly heartbreaking. Coming against decent opposition (which Ohio State is), that’s a huge leap forward from earlier this season. A game like this is one that Michigan will be able to win with another year or two of Division-1 recruiting, coaching, and development.

Tempo Free

From the official box score, a look at the tempo-free stats:

Ohio State 2012
Ohio State Michigan
Faceoff Wins 10 Faceoff Wins 12
Clearing 15-17 Clearing 19-22
Possessions 30 Possessions 36
Goals 12 Goals 9
Offensive Efficiency .400 Offensive Efficiency .250

Considering they were playing against a pretty slow team, the pace of play was right around the national average. Michigan actually won the battle on faceoffs and did pretty well on the clear to control possessions. Time of possession, on the other hand, was probably slanted in the favor of the stall-tastic Buckeyes.

This game was lost for Michigan – as we’ve seen many times this year – on the defensive end of the field. While they didn’t light the world on fire offensively, that number is actually about average on Ohio State’s excellent defense. However, Ohio State scored at will (as have lots of teams this year), and the Bucks were able to respond when Michigan drew close.

Notes

As noted above, this was a pretty good performance for Michigan against a pretty good team. They committed only four more turnovers than the Buckeyes, and though they got of 10 fewer shots, they actually put a greater percentage of them on goal than did OSU. We’re seeing incremental progress that indicates good things for the future. Unfortunately, in the here and now, things are evaluated on the basis of wins and losses, and this goes in the record book as an ‘L,’ no matter how encouraging the performance may have been.

Brian Greiner did an outstanding job on faceoffs against a team that is generally pretty good at winning them – or at least not bad at it. Greiner also had an offensive explosion with goals on two clean faceoff wins. Excellent day for the fifth-year senior.

Other offensive standouts were Alex Vasileff (three goals), Trevor Yealy (two goals) and Willie Steenland (a goal and an assist). Steenland continued being turnover-prone, with four on the day, but balanced it out to a degree with increased offensive production.

Defensively, J.D. Johnson and Austin Swaney both caused two turnovers. Johnson picked up three GBs, while Swaney had five (but balanced it out with a turnover – not uncommon for an LSM – and a penalty).

Emil Weiss had a great performance again. He’s not perfect – he’ll let in a softie every now and then – but given the struggles of the defense in front of him, what with the wide open looks it gives up, etc., saving 50% of shots faced is excellent. With another year of experience and and improved defense next year – along with better health and a bit of competition between the pipes – the goalie situation should be a strong point for Team Two.

One Ohio State goal was scored while Weiss was out of net on the ten-man ride (this is bound to happen when Michigan uses the 10-man heavily, but the payoff is that they held one of the country’s best clearing teams into a subpar performance).

For the Buckeyes, Logan Schuss was the star – shocker – but it took him 13 shots to score three goals (he also had two assists) so it was an inefficient day for him. For Michigan’s defense, holding one of the country’s top offensive players to an inefficient day – especially when no one other guys steps up to fill that void – is a good performance. Of course, allowing 11 different opposing players to find their way onto the scorehseet is no bueno.

Up Next

Michigan has one last winnable game against slumping Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights have lost their last three games and five of their last six, with the lone victory coming in overtime against Providence (winners of one game this year – although they did beat Michigan in Fall Ball play). Of course, “winnable” and “guarantee” are not the same thing – and the latter doesn’t exist for this Michigan squad.

The game takes place in Piscataway, N.J. on Saturday at 7 p.m. If Michigan does somehow manage to pull of a win, it will build confidence going into next year (before said confidence is smashed to bits by North Carolina the following week).

Detroit 8, Jacksonville 7

The Titans ended a two-game mini-slump against Jacksonville on Saturday, and in the process all-but sealed their berth into the MAAC Championship. Good weekend in Detroit.

Tempo Free

From the official box score, a look at the tempo-free stats:

Jacksonville 2012
Jacksonville Detroit
Faceoff Wins 10 Faceoff Wins 9
Clearing 14-15 Clearing 17-18
Possessions 26 Possessions 28
Goals 7 Goals 8
Offensive Efficiency .269 Offensive Efficiency .286

Both teams cleared pretty well – nobody was setting records on the ride Saturday. They were about even on faceoffs, which I guess is bound to happen when two pretty bad faceoff teams (both around bottom 10 in the country) square off. Anything close to 50% is pretty good for this Detroit team, and they should be able to win a lot of the game in which they don’t get killed there.

In a one-goal game, the winning team is bound to have a better efficiency mark, unless there’s a big disparity in possessions. One possession either way could have changed the outcome, so the difference is amplified.

Notes

As noted above, the faceoffs went much better than the season average for UDM. In fact, they were just one loss – by non-regular faceoff man Nick Garippa, for example – from being dead even. This was a pretty slow game, so each faceoff was pretty important, and the Titans were able to hold their own.

Offensively, Shayne Adams was once again the focal point with Joel Matthews out of the lineup, but unlike last year, he had plenty of help, as well. His four goals were matched by two goals and two assists from Alex Maini atop the points board. Wes Steen added two goals – his first points of the season – to close out multi-point days.

On defense, you will assuredly be SHOCKED to find out that Jordan Houtby and Jamie Hebden led the team in caused turnovers with four and three, respectively. Chris Nemes wasn’t far behind with two of his own.

A.J. Levell had a good day in goal, saving 10 of the 17 shots he faced. Six of those saves came in the fourth quarter (in which he only allowed one goal) to will UDM to a win.

The Titans looked a lto like Michigan in terms of their scoring pattern. They ran up a 3-0 lead, then allowed six straight from the end of the first quarter through the middle of the third. Unlike Michigan, however, they were able to respond in a big way. Five straight goals earned them the win.

For Jacksonville, T.J. Kenary’s four goals and Max Gurowski’s three assists led the team on the day. Kenary had been underachieving compared to expectations to this point on the year, but his big day came at the expense of the Dolphins’ leading scorer Cameron Mann, who had just one goal and one assist.

Both teams were terrible on the man-up, going a combined 0-for-10. In a somewhat surprising turn of events, Detroit actually committed fewer penalties than Jacksonville.

Up Next

Detroit has a non-conference date against Bellarmine next weekend before closing out the MAAC slate at VMI. The ECAC opponent isn’t going to have a great effect on their greater season-long goals (now amounting to “win the MAAC tournament or bust”), but it is a chance to add a non-conference victory.

The bigger game is the one against VMI, but even that might not be super-relevant to the conference standings by the time it rolls around.
