Afternoon Lax Links: 7-19-11

Michigan State’s Dwayne Hicks was named the MCLA Coach of the Year. Unwilling to bask in past glory, he’s already looking forward to next year:

“What I’m looking forward to are the guys from last year’s team who step up and say ‘I’m ready to play.  Give me the ball.’  I’m also looking forward to seeing all the recruits who are coming to Michigan State knowing this is a good team and they will have to bring their ‘A’ game to earn a spot.  It will be an exciting year.”

With Michigan no longer plying their trade in the MCLA, it will be interesting to see how the Spartans react to the opportunity to become a league power.

North Oakland Sports talks all-area girls team. Clarkston dominated the selections, unsurprising given that they’re the only team in the coverage area to reach the round of 16 in the State Tournament.

The Sugar Bowl is hosting a lacrosse “classic” in Louisiana this February between Texas and Arizona State. More interesting, though, is another portion of the release:

The Sugar Bowl also looks to be setting its eyes toward higher fruits in the lacrosse world, seeking to attract two NCAA Division I lacrosse teams for the 2013 event.  Tyler Gray, the social media conductor for the Sugar Bowl lacrosse event, said this on the Facebook event page, “The goal is to get two D-1 teams and two top MCLA teams to play in separate exhibitions in 2013.”

It would be pretty cool (and let me point out that this is pure speculation on my part) to see, for example, Michigan State and Texas/LSU/Florida State play in the MCLA game, with Michigan taking on a name opponent in the D-1 game at this event in a couple years.

The US Lacrosse Champion Boys All-American Showcase starts tomorrow and runs through Friday, and there are a couple players of note, both on Team Liberty:

#6 – Cameron Dabir (A), Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., Culver Military Academy (2011), Washington & Lee
#22 – Emil Weiss (G), Cary, N.C., Apex High School (2011), University of Michigan

The Girls’ Championship game airs on ESPN3.com today, but as far as I can tell, there’s no coverage for the Boys’ final.
