Lax Links: December 4, 2012

It’s been too long, no? Time to run down the links. General Division-1 expansion/realignment post coming later.

College

In the biggest news of the time period, Central Michigan will consider adding women’s lacrosse on Thursday.

Michigan’s program met with The Program a few weeks ago. The video evidence is on Youtube:

Scintillating footage of calisthenics there.

Detroit’s Joe MacLean and Tom Sible were on the UDM Ethics Bowl (apparently this is a thing) championship team.

Lawrence Tech coach Kevin Riley is battling cancer – and winning.

You can check out Calvin College’s spring schedule here, and Aquinas’s here.

Michigan’s Graham Conlan gets the official site profile treatment, as does Josh Stauffer.

Lacrosse Magazine talks about Hope’s first year as a varsity program and coach Mike Schanhals’ journey to get the Dutchmen to that level.

Fall ball highlights from Aquinas.

Detroit Women’s schedule.

Grand Valley goalie Danny Kransberger (a Forest Hills Central alum and Detroit transfer) is the Lacrosse Magazine pre-season player of the year in MCLA-2.

Recruiting

Roland Park (Md.) Country School senior Emma Guarino signed with Michigan’s women’s program.

A pair of lacrosse players from Birmingham Seaholm are headed to in-state Division-1 programs. Katherine Quigley will play for the Michigan women’s team, and Adam Susalla will play for the Detroit men.

Mattawan midfielder David Stafford signed with St. John’s, though it’s as a preferred-walkon type. Good to see guys from outside the traditional lacrosse areas (Metro Detroit and Grand Rapids) head to Division-1 schools.

St. Paul’s School for Girls (Md.) attack Amanda Sutor signed with Michigan.

Canton attackman Timothy Popp signed with Lawrence Tech‘s fledgling MCLA-2 program.

Philadelphia Strath Haven junior Lily Kovach committed to Michigan.

Northview defenseman R.J. Nickerson committed to Grand Valley, as did Forest Hills Central LSM Chris Bosscher and Holland defenseman Joey Seiler.

Notre Dame Prep’s Kyle Beauregard signed with UDM (thanks to Nick Garippa for passing along the photo).

Signing Day photos from a number of Michigan signees. Cincinnati St. Xavier attack Ian King in a group shot, Paul Dwyer Catholic (Ont.) attack Austin Shanks signed in what appears to be his living room, and Brighton FOGO Brian Archer is in a mystery location with a lot of hair.

The first signing class in the U-M women’s program’s history.

Detroit Catholic Central midfielder Alec Gilhooly committed to UDM.

High School/Club

Cranbrook sophomore Michael Langdon got some love from Inside Lacrosse for standing out at the Jake Reed Blue Chip camp. An attackman who impressed – New Canaan (Conn.) attackman Michael Kraus, who I assume is the younger brother of Michigan freshman Peter. 2014 Cranbrook attack Taylor Ghesquiere also received some ink at the FLG in 3D fall showcase.

Titanium Elite won their game at PPL Park in Philadelphia in the NXT Philly Showcase a few weeks back. The team defeated NXT by a 10-3 count. The Ohio-based club team features a host of Michigan natives: Brother Rice teammates Liam Reaume and Patrick Cosgrove, Country Day’s Jack Bergmann, and Forest Hills Northern teammates Grant Lardieri and Bobby Pelton.

Michigan names litter the all-star rosters from the Can-Am Showcase at Detroit Country Day several weeks back. 412 Lax also has some photos from the event.

The Wolverine Warrios club program is profiled.

Premier Lacrosse Group has winter training sessions available. More information is available at their website.

Grand Valley State and Davenport will face off Thursday night in a benefit game for a team member whose family lost their home to a fire.

Etc.

You don’t expect to see lacrosse – particularly from the state of Michigan – mentioned in an NFL coaching article, but here we are:

TEMPE, Ariz. — Kevin Spencer was coaching a lacrosse practice at Detroit Country Day School in 1976 when a passing car slowed down and stopped. A vaguely familiar figure stepped out.

It was Bill Belichick, then an assistant for the Detroit Lions.

The duo had competed against each other in college lacrosse — Spencer at Springfield (Mass.) College, Belichick at Wesleyan University (Middletown, Conn.) — but the memories were a little fuzzy.

“Bill was a Maryland guy (raised in Annapolis), and of course, lacrosse is huge in Maryland, but I think it shocked him to see it in Detroit, Michigan,” Spencer recalled. “We kind of looked at each other for a minute, trying to place each other, then I said, ‘You’re Belichick, right?’ He said, ‘Yeah. You’re that pain-in-the neck defenseman from Springfield, right?'”

Bill Belichick’s connection to lacrosse is well-known, but the Country Day tie is an interesting new angle (thanks to Jamal Robertson for the link).

The Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Coaches’ Association will host its winter coaching clinic this Saturday at Great Lakes Golf and Sports complex in Auburn Hills. You can’t beat the price (free), and guest speakers include club coaches at Michigan and Michigan State, among several others.

Mike Costello covers the U.S. Lacrosse Michigan Chapter Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Catherine Ditsas, Mary Ann Meltzer, Graham Adams, Rob Ambrose, and Roger Bunton are the new inductees.

Michigan alum Trevor Yealy is in camp with the NLL’s Washington Stealth. The program’s all-time leading scorer (both MCLA and NCAA eras) works for Boeing.

Box Lacrosse is available in Jenison.
