    Ouch.
Welcome to the real world, Wolverines.
Outcoached, outplayed and out-hustled…and did I say outcoached?
Your goalie kept the world from knowing this was a slaughter.
Number 22 (apparently a freshman) made a least 10 saves where he had absolutely no help….

    • CKLaxalum says:

Michlaxfan, I’m not sure what the big deal is here. A second year varsity team (half of whom are freshmen) lost 11-6 to the #14/15 team in the country.

Titans lose at Ohio State 14 to 8… Detroit was tied with OSU 6-6 at half, playing well. Came out and floundered in the 3rd losing 5 to 1, and tied the Buckeyes in the 4th… Unforced turnovers, and some penalties did the Red, White and Blue in…. Played hard, and have to figure a way to win the whole game…Next up is Navy on the road in Annapolis… No easy one’s for UDM… Good things: Houtby, outstanding, Birney played well in the first half… got to keep under control… Can and did play with OSU… But ill timed and questionable calls went against them… face offs were just ok… Had a goal called back and it was BS… But whenever any team crosses the boarder you can expect that garbage… Not the reason they lost though…

    • Reg Hartner says:

Funny that you mention the refs. Usually you do get home cooked in Ohio. Not this time. Effinger is from Grosse Point, Carter is from Indiana and Espinoza is from Illinois.

  3. AndyD says:

Did not get to go to the UM game this week. Encouraged by both, but UDM at some point needs to get one of these non-conference upset wins. It will be a big moment for their program. They are obviously capable. Faceoffs continue to be a problem, but they have cut down on turnovers and Levell is really good. Birney has a lot of talent. Not surprised, after watching him in HS, that he’s a little out of control. When he gets more game savvy, look out. When does OSU travel to Detroit for a change? Pretty one sided deal so far.

CKLaxAlum’s pro-UM bias shows a lot of the time, but I definitely agree with him here. Michigan showed great improvement. Roster is still half club guys and the other half are freshmen. PSU is a very good team with better athletes and depth and a lot more experience. This is a team that beat Hopkins last week in a scrimmage. (Yes, it was a scrimmage but it at least shows the level they are capable of.) UM got killed on faceoffs, but their stud (hopefully) freshman FOGO didn’t play. That skewed GBs and possessions. They did not turn the ball over, cleared much better, and special teams were very good. From the sound of it, this goalie could steal them a game or two. Encouraging. Can’t expect them to play with top-20 teams yet.

    • Tim says:

It’s definitely fair to say that anybody killing either team for their respective Saturday results is agenda-driven, not reality-driven. Sure, it would be nice if Detroit and Michigan were top-15 teams. Reality says they’re not, and to stick with teams of that caliber is encouraging at this point in each of their programs.

  4. CKLaxalum says:

AndyD, keep in mind that bias can go both ways. There’s plenty of pro-UDM bias on here, as well as anti-UofM bias. Also, for a good number of posters, this is their first experience with D-1 lacrosse and/or the world of lacrosse outside of MI…so some of the opinions aren’t always as informed as they could be.

I’d also be cautious with over-use of the “club guys” moniker. Especially at this point, a lot of those “club guys” were top high school players that were recruited by D1/D3 schools. The fact that they initially chose to go to a school with only club ball doesn’t make them some kind of outcasts. That is another form of bias.

I will say it again, I’m a big fan of both UofM and UDM, and don’t have any affiliation with either school. I’ve been around this sport for a long time and have D1 as well as out-of-state experience, and I’m going to call it as I see it…all feelings aside. Honest evaluation will do much more to improve lacrosse in this state (from college all the way to youth) versus cheerleading and feel-good talk.

  5. laxisfun says:

Considering UDM knew before the game and again after the first quarter and again after the 2nd and 3rd quarter there seemed to be no adjustments to stop him (1 man show) 7g 3a and 17 shots???? Suggestion would have to put Houtby on him and guaranteed he production would have been way down. Glad Birney had a good game. Goaltending as usual was solid not sure how many saves AJ made but it was a lot. Face offs have to improve as well as the wing play as well unforced turnovers which have to decrease to give the offence time to set up. Another huge area to improve on is getting your best scorers more looks Adams 2g on 2 shots and if not mistaken pulled when tied 6-6 hmmm …hopefully things are learned from every loss instead of taking the approach that we were suppose to lose anyway…

    • Tim says:

It’s tough to stop Schuss, no matter how many guys you put on him. Credit to Ohio State for finding ways to get him open, but I think it’s fair to say that – as good as UDM is defensively – you just can’t stop a guy like Schuss without creating tons of opportunities for other guys.

    • Reg Hartner says:

Most of Schuss’ output was man up and transition off turnovers. 6 on 6 he had a few points, but nothing they were doing on D was a failure.

  6. laxisfun says:

Absolutely correct BUT who would you rather get the majority of shots a
already identified all american or your secondary shooters Logan scored his goals on turnovers and passes not dodges l guarantee if you put Houtby on him its a far different game were UDM would of had a far better chance to win.

    • AndyD says:

That’s a bold guarantee from someone on the sidelines. Lots of armchair coaches out there. Houtby is very good. So is Schuss. Maybe matching them up limits Schuss. Maybe it also takes your most effective defensive weapon and best transition guy out of the game. Maybe it screws up your slide / recovery system. No offense intended. Just playing devil’s advocate, and I didn’t see the game, but I tend to trust the professionals on this kind of stuff.

      • laxisfun says:

Not so bold when you no the answer but then again no use debating this with someone that wasn’t even there (arm chair qb)
