A big D-1 day, with programs looking to break a slide. Since I didn’t get around to previewing the men’s games… both are must-wins, given the caliber of opposition. No further explanation necessary.

I watched both games today. Michigan won, but made it more dramatic than it had to be. Brad Lott seemed to get injured, as he didn’t play much after the first quarter, but did take one of the very last face-offs. Michigan limited transition for the most part, but defensively gave up a few too easy looks. Zonino looked solid, as did Chris Walker.

The defense seemed to be getting spread out, even on man-down. At one point Furman had the ball near the goal line, and we had defenders all the way at the top of the box. It opened up some passing lanes, and made help defense difficult. In the 4th quarter, things looked tighter, although maybe UM just changed up their look.

I only saw parts of the 2nd half of the UDM game, but they fought back well in the 3rd quarter, and due to some frantic play at the very end allowed Wagner to tie it up and even get an EMO chance to win. Birney though, shot from what looked like outside the box, and scored with 0.8 seconds to go. It was a carbon copy of the goal against UM. Wagner looked stunned. Congrats to them on fighting back and picking up the win.

Jason: I didn’t see yesterday’s game, but why didn’t UM beat this team by 6 or more goals? Isn’t Furman one of the worst D-1 teams? Was it UM playing down to the level of competition?

      • Jason says:

We were up 4 (laxpower predicted UM as 4 pt favorite) with just a couple minutes to go, and some odd calls/luck allowed them to get another 2 at the end, so it wasn’t quite as close as it seemed. We also started slow. Offensively we weren’t quite crisp.

We may have been playing down, but Furman wasn’t terrible. They reminded me of UDM, but with less depth. Defensively they were pretty organized, and UM had to work for their looks.

Having Lott out for a decent period didn’t help either. This team is very young, with lots of Freshman and Sophomores playing a lot of minutes. They likely haven’t been practicing much (if any) outdoors. Young team, on the road, I’d still expect some growing pains or inconsistency.
